— Regulus Aa, to Denebola
|
Regulus Aa (Alpha Leonis Aa, HD 87901 A, Cor Leonis, Kabeleced) is the nearest B-type star to Earth, a B-type subgiant which is the current primary star of the Regulus quadruple system, 79.021 light-years away.
Bio
Regulus Aa is a star who tries hard to make the best of whatever situation he's in, regardless of how bad things are. One of the most defining atributes of Regulus is his ellipsoidal shape, which has oftentimes rendered him the subject of ridicule. Regardless of this predicament, many stars have befriended him due to his importance.
One of the biggest enigmas was the fact that while Regulus has a 0.3 M☉ white dwarf orbiting him closely with a period of around 40 days, he's also a B-type star, meaning his age would have to be over a billion years old to account for the white dwarf's formation. This is solved under the hypothesis that he was once a much less massive star than he is now, stripping mass from the once-normal Regulus Ab and consequently spinning up to 96.5% of the speed required to tear himself apart, or once every 15.9 hours.
One of the stars who won't leave him alone is Denebola. He's tired of hearing constant death threats, especially considering the state he's in, rejuvenated by the mass he stole from Regulus Ab.
Coverage
Regulus Aa appears as the co-host of the defunct Exoplanet Wars, alongside Pollux.
