2024 YR4 is an Apollo-type asteroid and a near-Earth object. It was the most dangerous asteroid known for a brief time in February 2025, with its impact probability briefly surpassing 99942 Apophis before diving back down to reasonable levels (0.0039%). Was it to hit on December 22nd 2032, it would exercise roughly the same amount of strength as seen in the Tunguska event. Despite this, however, it is not truly classified as potentially hazardous due to the fact that it is under 140 meters in size.
Bio
2024 YR4 is one of many, many asteroids in the Solar System and by far still one of many to have an orbit reaching near Earth. What could be said of him before is that he was clumsier than most due to his inherent lack of any arms, and has a remarkably terrible sense of direction for who he is, owing to a very short-term memory. Like several other asteroids around, he was without a designation, and was nothing special to anyone until the day Earth found him on December 27th, 2024.
Earth respectfully freaked out immediately after her 3 seconds of figuring out 2024 YR4's orbit. 2024 YR4, however, doesn't bother to know or care about why everyone is staring at him now. Or rather, he was oblivious until another asteroid decided to tell him, as well as the faithful day of December 22nd, 2032. Now 2024 YR4 can't help but to crack a smile at the thought of Earth, and billions of people, freaking out over his existence. Clickbait videos are being made about 2024 YR4 left and right, AI-generated images of him dying are mass produced, and there's even entire cryptocurrency scams back on Earth centered around him. He couldn't be any happier seeing these and more, more being Earth diverting a lot of her current attention and telescopes to viewing him.
Possessing a crude understanding of the Earth's attitude towards other asteroids, such as Didymos-Dimorphos and Apophis, 2024 YR4 gets kicks out of scaring her, even though her and several other planets take his threats completely seriously and at face value. In fact, he can't even tell which planet Earth is half the time, due to his horrible memory. 2024 YR4 only manages to get a rough idea of who she is due to the constant descriptions given to him by other asteroids along his orbit, to which he never manages to catch all the details of.
It took roughly another 3 seconds for Earth to realize that he has a 1 in 26,000 chance of impacting, and is therefore not dying anytime soon. Now that 2024 YR4 turns out to have a much better chance of not dying in a collision with Earth, he's ended up much like Apophis, in that he won't pose a real threat in the slightest, although he does encourage fearmongering because he finds it funny.
